Create an itinerary including Sverd i fjell
Embedded in the stone of a small hill, Sverd i fjell marks the site of a historic battle in which King Harald Fairhair united Norwegian people into one kingdom in 872 CE. Modeled after Viking swords and symbolizing unity, peace, and freedom, the three swords stand 10 m (33 ft) tall next to the fjord. One interpretation says that the sword topped with the small crown represents the conquering King Harald and that the other two stand for the defeated kings. The spot offers a good opportunity for quiet solitude or a picnic. By using our Stavanger journey planner, you can arrange your visit to Sverd i fjell and other attractions in Stavanger.

  • This was a nice 1 hour walk from town on a day with good weather. Was an interesting site to see. But beware, there were no public restrooms!

  • We walked from the port in Stavanger to the ‘Swords in rock’ and it was well worth it. Magnificent place and awe-inspiring. Loved reading about the inspiration behind it and something crossed off my bucket list. Local toilets and coffee stand near by as well. Nice place to walk around
  • Beautiful place on the beach. The story behind the swords make it all the more worth seeing...they symbolize peace, unity and freedom. Nice area to relax with ice cream van there.
