  • This you have got to see! The valley does not get sun during winter, so go see the townsquare on a sunny day during winter to get the full show. It is - in fact - a truly unique experience. Nothing.....  more

  • Interesting concept. The mirror works (see picture)
  • Great hike to an interesting local attraction. The Norwegian industrial city of Ryukan lies in a deep valley in Telemark County, 150 kilometers west of Oslo. Surrounded by steep mountains, the city lies in the east-west valley, cut off from sunshine every year from September to March. Not a single beam lit the city. But that changed. Rjukan is now illuminated by three giant 28 square meters of mirrors mounted on a nearby mountain. Mirrors reflect the sun's rays and bring light to the city in the valley. So they function like an artificial sun, which makes life in the city much more bearable and enjoyable for the people. The system of heliostat mirrors (reflecting the sun's rays toward a predetermined target) is remotely controlled by a computer and rotates and tilts the surface towards the sun so that it always hits the largest local square in the city center. It illuminates the area of 186 square meters really very well. The project of artificial lighting called "Mirror" cost almost 19 million crowns.
