One of the world's greatest artistic treasures, Sistine Chapel was originally called Capella Magna. The site takes its current name from Pope Sixtus IV, who restored the chapel between 1477 and 1480. The structure has long served as a place of both religious and functionary papal activity. It's the site of the papal conclave, the process by which a new pope is selected. The chapel's fame comes mainly from the frescoes decorating its interior. The ceiling, painted by Michelangelo between 1508 and 1512, is the most notable feature and a cornerstone work of High Renaissance art. The ceiling's various elements form part of a larger decoration. The huge fresco entitled "The Last Judgment" is one of Michelangelo's greatest works. Botticelli, Ghirlandaio, and Raphael also contributed to the chapel's impressive interior. Skip the extremely long entry lines by booking a guided tour with the Vatican Museums ahead of time. This might be the most impressive thing I've ever seen. Its incredibly beautiful and detailed, Michelangelo's enormous masterpiece. Bear in mind you are not able to take any photos in the chapel.

I can appreciate the history behind it but I fail to understand why the ceiling of this place seems to be one of the highlights of Rome. If you can, be sure to do the entire tour of the Vatican Museum. Along your way you will see dozens of long hallways with tall ceilings, all of which are painted with beautiful art. Don't rush to see it, rather enjoy all the other beautiful art Rome shows you just by walking anywhere.

I’m not sure why anyone would review this iconic landmark. It’s among the most memorable and must see places of human accomplishment and art; ingenuity on the entire earth. Though smaller than most people imagine and not so grand in its design as much of its crafted arts and mystique. It’s a place if in Rome you absolutely must see.
