Considered one of the most beautiful medieval churches in the area, Saint-Omer Cathedrale is strongly influenced by Gothic architecture and local tradition. Although referred to as a cathedral, this is a Roman Catholic basilica with architecture from the 13th through 18th centuries. Omer founded the modest 17th-century chapel at the cemetery site of the monks of St.-Bertin Abbey. Three noncontiguous chapels provide a nave flanked by a 15th-century tower to the west that rises 50 m (164 ft) high. Look for the perfectly preserved, 13th-century cenotaph of St.-Omer, the Gothic masterpiece sculpture of God Therouanne, and the famous Renaissance mausoleum Eustache de Croy.
