Australian Corps Memorial, Le Hamel

Amazing and important zpot during the First World War. Can't imagine the hard fighting that took place here. Must visit when you're in the region.

The memorial to the Australian Corps is built on what was once, a century ago, part of the German front line trenches. On 4th July 1918, the Australian Corps, supported by American infantry and British tanks, took those trenches in what was a masterfully co-ordinated attacked planned by Lt-General John Monash. Today, the simple but imposing memorial is in open farmland with a wide, sweeping view of the Somme countryside. As you walk from the large car park, along a footpath through the fields, you will pass a series of informative panels describing in great detail the build-up, execution and aftermath of the battle. It's all nicely laid out, extremely interesting and well worth a visit.
