Basilique Notre-Dame de Bonsecours, Bonsecours

On a site dedicated to the Virgin Mary, Basilique Notre-Dame de Bonsecours dates from the 1840s. However, pilgrims have come to this site to venerate her since the Middle Ages--first through a chapel here and later through a parish church that was destroyed in 1473 and again during the French Revolution. Eugene Jacques Barthélemy designed the current basilica in the Neo-Gothic style--the first example of this style in France. Its nave is flanked by aisles without a transept, and a tower is topped by a spire above the western portal. In front of the west facade, you'll find a monument to Joan of Arc. The interior of the basilica has the distinction of being fully painted, following the example of the Ste.-Chapelle.
