Trip Planner: South Pacific / Australia / Queensland / Brisbane Region / Brisbane / Boggo Road Gaol (Jail)
Boggo Road Gaol in Brisbane, Australia, was Queensland’s main jail from the 1880s to the 1980s, by which time it had become notorious for poor conditions and rioting. Located on Annerley Road in Dutton Park, an inner southern suburb of Brisbane, it is the only surviving intact gaol in Queensland that reflects penological principles of the 19th century. After closing in 1992, the larger 1960s section was demolished, leaving the heritage listed section (built as a women’s prison in 1905), which is open to the public through guided tours run by Boggo Road Gaol Pty Ltd.Put Boggo Road Gaol (Jail) at the forefront of your travel plans using our Brisbane itinerary tool.
It was officially known as "Brisbane Gaol" but was commonly known as "Boggo Road" after the original name of the Annerley Road. A new street formed after 1996 now has the name Boggo Road.

The tour was fun. I didn't find it scary, though some of the stories were both interesting and gruesome. Our guide was good, with lots of interesting tales of life inside, escapes, executions...

The history tour was educational, informative and interesting. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and professional. Love the stories about the famous escapologist and the black cat. Recommended to anyone for this 90 minutes tour, tourists or local residents, to learn a slice of Brisbane jail history. You should also go to St Helena Island if you are particularly interested in jails.
Tour guide was very good and friendly. The goal itself is an interesting & terrible place at the same time. Definitely worth a visit especially for those Brisbane residents who remember it. Good value for the cost.
