In an area boasting beaches that face both the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, vacations in Punta Cana have been popular with tourists since the early 1970s.
Do some cultural sightseeing at Altos de Chavon and Altos de Chavon Regional Museum of Archaeology. You'll enjoy a bit of beach vacationing at Macao Beach and Bavaro Beach. Take a break from Punta Cana with a short trip to Speed Boats Tours in Bayahibe, about 1h 05 min away. Las Terrenas is a town on the northeast coast of the Dominican Republic, located in the province of Samaná. Start off your visit on the 9th (Fri): explore the striking landscape of Los Haitises National Park and then stop by Samana's Picasso: Eusebio dominican paintings. On your second day here, stroll through Playa Bonita, then kick back and relax at Punta Bonita, and then stroll through Playa Coson Beach.

You can drive from Punta Cana to Las Terrenas in 4 hours. Other options are to take a shuttle; or take a bus. In August, plan for daily highs up to 37°C, and evening lows to 30°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 10th (Sat) early enough to go by car to Puerto Plata.

Although out of fashion in the past decades, major revitalization efforts have made a trip to Puerto Plata a growingly popular option for the adventurous travelers.
Get outdoors at 27 Charcos and Golden Beach (Playa Dorada). Fortaleza San Felipe and Joyeria Las Americas are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Change things up with a short trip to Iglesia Sagrado Corazon de Jesus in Moca (about 1h 15 min away). There's lots more to do: get up close and personal with brilliant marine life at Ocean World Adventure Park, Puerto Plata, steep yourself in history at Casa Museo General Gregorio Luperon, and examine the collection at Amber Museum.
