Nestled on the banks of the Perfume River, the city of Hue remains most famous as the former home of the Nguyen Dynasty, the influence of which remains evident in local palaces, temples, forts, and museums.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Tomb of Minh Mang and Tomb of Tu Duc. Get some historical perspective at Imperial City and Thai Hoa Palace. Venture out of the city with trips to Laguna Golf Lang Co (in Cu Du) and Canh Duong Beach (in Lang Co). There's much more to do: don't miss a visit to Tu Dam Pagoda, admire the landmark architecture of Thien Mu Pagoda, pause for some serene contemplation at Phu Cam Cathedral, and browse the different shops at Big C Market.

Take a bus from Halong Bay to Hue in 18.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train; or do a combination of ferry, bus, and train. In January, plan for daily highs up to 27°C, and evening lows to 20°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 11th (Sat) early enough to go by car to Hoi An.
