Pearl of the Danube

You might consider the city of Budapest, divided by the Danube River into two distinctive cities--Buda and Pest--to be essentially one large World Heritage Site.
Step out of Budapest to go to Eger and see Eger Castle, which is approximately 1h 45 min away. There's much more to do: admire the striking features of Hungarian Parliament Building, take in the views from Szechenyi Lanchid, take in the spiritual surroundings of St. Stephen's Basilica (Szent Istvan Bazilika), and steep yourself in history at Liberty Statue.

Vienna, Austria to Budapest is an approximately 2.5-hour train ride. You can also drive; or fly; or take a train. In September, plan for daily highs up to 25°C, and evening lows to 13°C. On the 26th (Wed), you'll have the morning to explore before heading back home.
