Rigi, Lucerne

4.7
#3 of 9 in Parks in Lucerne
Surrounded by three lakes, Rigi once inspired painter J.M.W. Turner to create a series of works studying its changing views and blue sunrises. Known to many as the "Queen of the Mountains," the Alpine massif features a towering summit 1,798 m (5,898 ft) above sea level. A year-round tourist destination served by one of Europe's oldest mountain railways, the idyllic region draws a growing number of nature lovers with an extensive network of walking trails and ski slopes. Gear up and tackle the mountain's hiking paths all the way to the summit, or sit back and enjoy the sweeping views on the cable car that departs from the small town of Kussnacht. • Took the train from vitzanu to the top and walked back down to Vitzanu. Generally well marked directions, amazing views all the way down, step in places especially towards the bottom, but well worth i...  more »
  • It's only a little time before a train, it's too much to be lost! If you're walking down the stop or want to take a photo at the stopway, it's best to see the time sheet clearly, and if you don't, you might have to wait an hour. If it's like this every time, the journey takes a lot more time. I can't get the view than the Pilaus.

  • I visited Rigi in April. Took the cogwheel train to the summit here. The day we went it was cold, and it was hailing but before the clouds covered everything it was such a beautiful site! I didn’t spend much time on the mountain but even with the little that I saw I was beyond impressed.
  • I made the mistake of going here on a cloudy day but I was quite lucky that I got to witness snowfall by the time I reached the top (this was June). The train is exceptionally good and leaves every hour. You'll get to see many waterfalls during the ride if you go during summers. I can't say much about the view since I couldn't see any of it due to the clouds but it is definitely a good idea to trek in this area.
