Trip Planner: Europe / Spain / Catalonia / Province of Barcelona / Barcelona / Cementerio de Montjuic
Winding paths, uneven grounds, and a steep, rocky hillside terrain give Cementerio de Montjuic a somewhat unusual flair for a city cemetery. The cemetery first opened in 1883 as the city of Barcelona's main burial ground, with the unusual hillside location selected so as not to crowd housing development. Today it is the final resting place of over a million people, and also features a grand mausoleum. Stroll the grounds and note the many different burial styles, including neo-Gothic graves, earth graves, above-ground coffins, family vaults, sepulchral niches, communal graves, and even cat graves. Be sure to bring a map so you don't lose your way in the enormous site. Arrange to visit Cementerio de Montjuic and other attractions in Barcelona using our Barcelona online travel route planner.

Some really unique things to see in this cemetery! It was quite difficult for me to get here without a car and I didn’t take a bus. Bad idea. Other than that there were some really cool sculptures!
Pretty cool and cooky cemetery. Some of the tombs are monumental. Definitely lots of egos went into some of them. Interesting and quiet place to contemplate the finality of life.
