Le Musee du Sel, Saint-Leu

2.2
#2 of 6 in Museums in Arrondissement of Saint-Paul
Le Musee du Sel details the history of the island’s salt production. Opened in 2007, this museum on the west coast of the island highlights salt production as it became industrialized during the 1940s. Salt is harvested by hand with perforated shovels after hot, dry days. As the sole manufacturer of salt, the site today features a shop in the area once used for the storage of dry salt. Nearby, turquoise waters and white sand can be found between two lava flows, forming a small cove with expansive views of the Indian Ocean. • Great place. Beautiful pictures to take. We did not visit the museum because we did it in France to guerande. So we know, but we have to do it.

  • Free access to be noted on the other hand, museum very poorly maintained and it's a shame. Several playful parts did not work. There are good explanations. The site could really be top if it was maintained and showcased. Beware, in some guides it is noted that one can bathe in a pool close to the museum. Beautiful pool but swimming is forbidden.

  • Went there while on the tourist trail. It's a small museum with a small film at the beginning to explain the origins history etc. I think they need all the help they can get to keep it going..I even bought some pkts of salt to take back even though I really didn't need to!! One thing I liked was the local bird/insect life etc in glass cases explaining what is what clearly...didn't have to read a thick tome to know which is what finally!
  • Museum all small and free, but almost all of the interactive panels are out of service. A tiny shop selling sachets of salt produced on-site. Low entry price (4 or €5) for the basic maintenance of the Museum would seem wise...
