Piton de Fournaise, Saint-Benoit

4.8
One of the world's most active volcanoes at present, Piton de Fournaise sits within a World Heritage-listed national park. At the lower parts of the volcano, accessible from the highway, you can see recently cooled lava flows. To reach the volcano rim you'll have to drive through the forest, first on a highway and then on a bumpy track. From there on, a well-maintained stairway (closed during seismic activity) leads down to the caldera floor. Wear good hiking shoes and layers of clothing since the weather below the rim changes quickly. Don't wander off the marked trails, especially in foggy weather. Confirm accessibility before you go to avoid disappointment. See Piton de Fournaise and all Saint-Benoit has to offer by arranging your trip with our Saint-Benoit tour builder app .
