Castelo de S. Jorge, a second-century citadel, overlooks the historical center of the city. This castle dates back to medieval times, approximately 48 BCE, when the city was under Roman rule. Celtic people originally inhabited this hilltop location, but ownership of the area changed over the years from Phoenicians, Greeks, and Carthaginians to Romans and a few other key players. In the 10th century, Moorish people fortified the fortress with cerca Moura, or Moorish encirclement. Though the 1755 Lisbon earthquake destroyed much of the castle, the remaining ruins are still open to the public. Explore one of the city's most popular tourist sites by foot, take in views from its high vantage point, and discover the castle's archeological and historic relevance. Plan to see Castelo de S. Castelo de S. Jorge Reviews
Great views from atop the city and lots of history. You can easily get a bus from the same place the Yellow Busses depart for 2 euro each. more »
Spent most of our time just walking 20 feet and then taking a bunch of photos...also great that it was like an actual castle, i.e. towers that you could climb up and such more »
Beautiful old Castle with the most magnificent view over the rooftops of Lisbon! Worth the up hill trek through old charming neighborhoods with plenty of street art. The peacocks were fun to watch and quite tame. They will gently eat from your hand! Don’t miss the little museum with all the old tile and pottery along with all the restoration photos. Definitely worth the 10€ entrance fee. We’ve been back three times!
