Basilica del Santo Nino, Cebu City

Admire the oldest Christian image in the Philippines, and pay tribute to a revered patron saint of Cebu City at Basilica del Santo Nino, the oldest Roman Catholic church in the country. Founded in 1565 and originally built from wood, the church houses a 30 cm (12 in) tall statue of Jesus as a child, adorned in fantastic luxurious robes and presented to a local queen by Magellan as a baptismal gift. A cradle of Christianity in the East recognized by the Pope in 1965, the church, ruined three times in fires, has been restored, and also survived a recent earthquake. Thousands of visitors come here to see the wooden figure of baby Jesus made by Flemish artists. • While we couldn't get in, we had a nice walk around as part of longer walk around the village. It between the main drag through town and the ocean front. You can also see the museum nearby.  more »
  • A beautiful place in which to contemplate your inner self. Can never visit Cebu without spending a few minutes in this holy place.  more »

  • Beautiful building which seems always full of people. There are some really nice works of arts inside and a lot of space in the court for those who wants to pray or whatever. The little garden inside is also very pretty and a bit more quiet. There is also a museum near one of the exit of the building (but at the exterior of the basilica)
  • Great place for worshipers. But I recommend to come here morning before 10AM and or after 3PM because the place bask of sunshine. I recommend to come here also on weekdays, because many people come here on weekends. If you want to attend mass, I think there are schedules even on weekdays, you just have to check the mass schedule before your visit. Just outside you can visit also the famous Magellan's Cross.
