Basilica del Santo Nino, Cebu City

Admire the oldest Christian image in the Philippines, and pay tribute to a revered patron saint of Cebu City at Basilica del Santo Nino, the oldest Roman Catholic church in the country. Founded in 1565 and originally built from wood, the church houses a 30 cm (12 in) tall statue of Jesus as a child, adorned in fantastic luxurious robes and presented to a local queen by Magellan as a baptismal gift. A cradle of Christianity in the East recognized by the Pope in 1965, the church, ruined three times in fires, has been restored, and also survived a recent earthquake. Thousands of visitors come here to see the wooden figure of baby Jesus made by Flemish artists. • Interesting architecture with the paintings and the murals as well as the glass paintings. A different experience having to light candles at a common place where people pray.  more »
  • The place where the seed of Christianity was planted. Home of the Sto. Niño (Holy Child), the religious icon brought by the Spaniards. Just outside the basilica is the replica (?) of the cross Magella...  more »

  • One of the oldest places to worship in Cebu Island. I really enjoyed the atmosphere of the place. It is solemn and I feel safe inside. The people there are not rowdy. The securities are nice people and will always give you a smile. But I have a cons for this place. It is not a good time to go during peak hours as it will get so crowded. So many people will come and go. And you will fight through it. Anyways the place is safe and there are food restaurants outside. Recommended for tourists if you like holy places.
  • Like most tourist spot in Cebu, this Basilica is a crowd magnate and a tourist destination. Thousands of people come to this place on a regular day, so expect it to double and triple during peak seasons, and festival dates. If you are a devout Catholic or an enthusiast of Church architecture, this one is one haven you shouldn't miss. The preservation of the original church with all its contents, including the main structure, and statues are worth a trip. It is beautiful and breathtaking. The solemnity of the place has also been observed so you could really offer a prayer without being interrupted or disturbed. Go around the whole vicinity. Cebuanos can be very friendly.
