Bahla Fort, Nizwa

#3 of 12 in Things to do in Nizwa
Tour the World Heritage Site of Bahla Fort, a vast mud-brick fortress, built during the 13th and 14th centuries. The fort was constructed by the Nabhani dynasty, rulers of the region at the time, but fell into disrepair throughout the ages, until it was recently extensively restored. Admire the towering fort walls, nestled on a sandstone foundation, explore its nooks and crannies, and enjoy the vista of the surroundings from the hilltop castle. • If you visit Nizwa you can't miss this fort, located a short distance from the city. It is in fact a very different building from nizwa Fort and the other splendid fort nearby, the Jabreen Castle, which is why they deserve to be visited all three. I suggest visiting Bahla Fort and Jabreen Castle with a day trip from Nizwa, also matching the villages of Al Hamra and Misfat al Abreyeen, being all very close. The fort has a large outdoor car park, toilets and a fountain of fresh drinking water. The property is very large and has many steps, however the visit is not challenging and is suitable for children, who will be affected, as well as adults, by the majesty of the complex and the variety of environments. If possible visit it during the coolest hours, however the alternation of enclosed and open environments and the fountains allow the necessary refrigeration at any time. The staff are extremely friendly. The cost of entry is very advantageous.

  • I would say, this is just an ok fort. Looks pretty nice, but feels like a maze when walking around. No direction signs or explanations anywhere.
  • Big and nice fort - only 0,5 Omr pro person entrance fee. Most rooms are empty and there usually aren't any information about it
