Trip Planner: South Pacific / New Zealand / North Island / Waikato Region / Taupo District / Orakei Korako Geothermal Park & Cave
Witness nature's power at work and admire the breathtaking landscapes at Orakei Korako Geothermal Park & Cave. Known for centuries for its geysers, thermal pools, terraces, and naturally carved geological formations, this area remains one of New Zealand's oldest and best-known tourist attractions. The famous Ruatapu Cave, with its pool of warm acid water, is just one of numerous monuments of geothermal activity you'll encounter in the area. A network of boardwalks gives you easy access to all of the thermal field's main points of interest, but be aware that numerous steps along the trail make it difficult to navigate for wheelchairs. However, the visitor's center is fully accessible to everyone, and in addition to souvenirs, informative material, and cold drinks it provides free-of-charge baby carriers to visitors with little ones. Make Orakei Korako Geothermal Park & Cave a centerpiece of your Wai-O-Tapu vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Wai-O-Tapu vacation app.

The wonderland is definitely well worth a visit. Also loved how the family price allowed for more than 2 children. However, don't expect anything near even semi-decent food from the cafe. We arrived..... more »
Absolutely spectacular! I've been living in NZ for 15 years and this was one of the best things I've ever done here. It was surreal, you're left alone to explore and there's so much to see. Other worldly! The kids from 3 to 12 years old loved it too and for anyone that says it's expensive, we went to Waitomo Caves last weekend and it was 3x the price! The place is in excellent condition, the kind of thing you don't mind spending money to look at because you can see that it all goes back into the place! Can't wait to come back :)
All the thermal activity that I was hoping to see. Easy walking board tracks. And easy access by boat from the Visitor Centre.
