Trip Planner: South Pacific / New Zealand / North Island / Bay of Plenty Region / Rotorua District / Rotorua / Waimangu Volcanic Valley
The result of a volcanic eruption from 1886, Waimangu Volcanic Valley represents the world's youngest geothermal system. The area features several lakes, including Frying Pan Lake--considered the world's largest hot spring, as well as a geyser, craters, and springs. In addition to hiking and bird-watching, you can also take a boat trip on one of the lakes to see the former site of the largest silica sinter deposits in the world, known as the Pink and White Terraces. Fantastic walking trail with well posted signage & great scenery (we didn’t do the boat trip around the lake). The trail is well maintained & relatively easy (note it’s mostly gravel & there are... more »
More than just thermal pools. We loved the history of the Waimangu Hotel / Waimangu Valley and of course, the Mt Tawera eruption plus finding the elusive pink & white terraces. we did the full walk.... more »
Wow !! Is the factor multiplied by 10 !!! Money worth spend. About three to four hours walking and trekking. One nature's wonder after the next. Quite mesmerizing when a person see these wonders right in front of their own eyes. Excellent and knowledgeable staff. Bus rides are provide back to the entrance. A lake boat ride about 45 minutes can be included in the package or pay to the boatman 👍😊
I would highly recommend a visit. Take your time and take in the wonder of nature. Flora and fauna abound. Strange volcanic activity abounds at every corner, you could just imagine a large animal from the past walking across your path. A bus is provided at various stops to bring you back to reality, but you will have memories to share and enjoy.
