Te Mata Peak, Hastings

Climb Te Mata Peak to the lookout point for bracing air and spectacular views. The 399 m (1,309 ft) high peak provides a great vantage point for the surrounding area, including the Heretaunga Plains and Hawke's Bay. Many short and longer trails for hiking and mountain biking crisscross the peak, with options for beginning, intermediate, and advanced hikers. The site has significance in Maori legend, and archeological research in the surrounding park suggests it was heavily settled at some point by indigenous communities. European settlers largely deforested the peak and surrounding area, which is now a combination of rocky cliffs and green rolling hills and valleys. • Highest peak in Hastings. Lovely drive to the summit. Breathtaking view of the north island's Hawkes bay landscape. Unlimited view into the horizon with sunlight beaming towards the earth. Typical summer view would look a bit barren, while winter could be much as beautiful with green all over. Please do visit folks.
  • We saw the most beautiful sunrise from here. There's ample space for car parking. Dustbins are available but we saw that they were full and there was litter strewn around the bins. Some was even flying around. Please don't litter.
