Greek Orthodox Cathedral of Saint George, Beirut

4.7
#2 of 17 in Historic Sites in Beirut
The oldest still-active church in Beirut, Greek Orthodox Cathedral of Saint George serves as the seat of the city’s Greek Orthodox Bishop. Built in the 18th century in place of the ruins of an ancient church, it was restored several times throughout the centuries and reopened in 2003, after being vandalized in the civil war. During the restorations in the 1990s, an array of artifacts were excavated from the area, ranging from the Roman and Byzantine times to relics from the Ottoman empire. Step inside to admire the frescoes and paintings of the interior, or visit the crypt where the archaeological findings are housed. • An imposing Catholic Church, right next to the great Blue Mosque of Beirut. An example of exemplary religious coexistence.

  • The most beautiful of the churches in Beirut. Not only the church itself is beautifully decorated, with paintings in every wall and in the ceiling, but there is also a chapel and a museum in the same complex. The chapel in the back is pretty, simple and gives a relaxed feeling. I felt I could spend hours there. An oasis in the turmoil that is a day walking through Beirut. The museum under the church, which is accessible from the left side is small but really interesting and a well maintained. It costs 5 thousand and is worth it. There you can see ruins of other ages in the same site. So it gives you the idea of how long has this soil been used by different civilizations.
  • Superb cathedral. Magnificent paintings. Peaceful sanctuary.
