Look up to the top of Freedom Monument, a copper statue of Liberty, for the three stars held aloft on this high obelisk. The stars symbolize the three major regions of Latvia. Kārlis Zāle designed the 42 m (138 ft) high memorial as a tribute to soldiers killed during the Latvian War of Independence. The sculptures and the bas-reliefs at the foot of the obelisk represent heroes, heroines, and the common people. Notice an ancient warrior standing between two kneeling modern soldiers in the "guards of the fatherland." Catch the changing of the guard every hour. The monument makes a great benchmark for navigation in Riga. This is a famous landmark in Riga and certainly stands out when seen in the flesh. The central square in which it stands is closed to traffic and there is a pleasant park alongside. Soldiers slow march in front of the monument all day. The second time we visited the area a Slovakian dignitary had just arrived accompanied by a police escort to lay a commemorative wreath and was welcomed by a military band.
It's fun to watch the guards swap over and do their walk on the half hour. It's a beautifully high monument representing the freedom. Good to see if you're passing.
