Rundāle Palace, Pilsrundale

Explore the history of Latvia's court through collections at Rundāle Palace. The palace was built in the 1736s as a summer residence for the Duke of Courland--Ernst Johann Biron. A Berlin sculptor and several Italian painters created most of the interior decorations, including lavish stucco creations. You can visit the Duke's suite with reception parlors and private rooms, and see a fully restored suite of duchess' rooms. Walk through a maze of alleys in a French garden with rose bouquets, pergolas, a green theater, and a fountain. The garden reflects the history of cultivating roses in Europe from the early 18th century onward. • Grandiose, renovated down to the details. Furniture varied and beautiful, very well highlighted. Remarkably manicured gardens of beauty. It takes time if you want to appreciate the details of the decorations and/or the paintings.

  • On the border of Latvia and Lithuania, a little to the side (there is a pointer) is the most beautiful place - Rundale. We drove purposefully, with an overnight stay in the hotel, with leisurely and off-season to enjoy fully. And it was worth it! This is the palace of Biron, the favorite of Empress Anna Ioanovna, his estate in Lifland. He built, as it has already been said, the famous Shot, the one that built the Hermitage and catherine palace in the Tsar's village. Recognizable style. From room to room, from hall to hall - the history of those centuries ... Pay attention to the white living room: there, among the stucco ceiling, a joke sculpter - a real twig in the nest of the stork. Go down to the basement, and there's an exhibition of costumes of the era, they're real! And of course, if the weather permits, the park... huge, well-groomed, hand-drawn on the lecicity... In general, don't listen to the whiners! Rundale is super.

  • A nice place to stop off if you are passing. I was on a group tour from Riga to Vilnius so only had an hour here which was spent in the gardens, which are very nice to explore but seem somewhat disjointed as everything is separated. Good facilities on offer and what I saw inside the house looked beautiful.
  • Such a wonderful place to visit. It's truly been restored to a high standard. I recommend that you spend the most time in the palace itself and, especially if you are an older person or walking is a little troublesome, take a little golf cart trip around the garden - it costs virtually nothing and you get a guided tour without having to walk an hour around the garden.
