Trip Planner: Europe / Ireland / Western Ireland / Province of Connacht / County Galway / Aran Islands / Inishmore / Dun Aonghasa
Perched atop a cliff, Dun Aonghasa represents the most popular of the prehistoric forts on the Aran Islands. Walk from the nearby museum up to the fort and enjoy panoramic views from the 100 m (328 ft) cliff. Marvel at the three terraced walls and intricate defense system of stones called Chevaux de Frise. Archeological studies have revealed that the fort was built in the Iron Age, possibly as far back as 1100 BCE, though the triple-wall defenses were likely added around 500 BCE. The fort is named for a pre-Christian god or mythical king, Aonghus mac Umhor. Explore the history of this ancient monument, but take care when walking and climbing around the site, especially with children, as it can be slippery. Dun Aonghasa Reviews
The hike up was a bit more than we expected, but so worth it. Great views. Enjoyed a light lunch before coming back down. more »

Awesome place to visit,Stone Fort with great view of the cliffs, and rocky landscapes that look like something from another planet! Surrounded by the dry walls, built in ancient times. It is said that some of them are older than thousand years, and it is amazing to see something that old, and built by hands of ancient civilizations, still standing and enduring the elements!
Beautiful place, but loads of noisy tourists there. Better visit off season and bring good shoes, the walk isn't long, but full of rocks. Very beautiful scenery around.
