A taste of medieval times in the middle of a modern downtown, Dublin Castle served as the seat of British rule in Ireland for over seven centuries. Although it remains part of a major government complex, the castle now mostly serves as a venue for ceremonial events, such as the inauguration of the country's president. Transformed over the ages from a medieval fortress to a Georgian palace, the castle complex contains an 800-year-old tower, the sole survivor of the original fortifications built on this spot in the early 13th century. Take a guided tour to see the gardens built over a site once occupied by a black pool, the "dubh inn" from which the city of Dublin got its name. It is in English but you can follow if you have a correct level. After the visit (60 minutes but it passes rather quickly), you can wander in free access: so you can revisit the rooms quietly and possibly restore the explanations in French to the people who accompany you.
I was disappointed with this visit as I had hoped to see the original castle but access was limited to the palace. As well, the city has built up around the facility so it is hard to get perspective o... more »
Loved the tour there. Our guide was full of information that is not readily found in the brochures. The grounds are well kept and provide a nice walk full of sculptures, both old and modern. The castle is luxurious with details at every turn. The restoration and maintenance of the Castle and the exhibits are extraordinary. Plan to spend a couple of hours exploring everything.
Great place to visit. Sense of history is almost palpable. You can simply walk the ground & small walled garden for free. Or pay to tour the inside. I recommend both. There's also a cafe within the castle, great cakes.
