Mount Brandon, Dingle Peninsula

#4 of 9 in Nature in Dingle Peninsula

Mount Brandon or Brandon (Irish: Cnoc Bréanainn, meaning "Brendan's hill"), at 952 metres (3,123 ft), is the one of the ten highest peaks in Ireland, being the 8th–highest peak in Ireland on the Arderin list, and the 9th–highest according to the Vandeleur-Lynam list. Brandon is the highest Irish mountain outside of the MacGillycuddy's Reeks range, and has the greatest prominence of any Irish peak except Carrauntoohil, Ireland's highest mountain. Mount Brandon is at the centre of a long high ridge called the Brandon Group range of mountains in the Dingle Peninsula in Kerry. The ridge contains seven other major peaks (i.e. above 2,000 ft in height), including the separate but similarly named, Brandon Peak, at 840 metres (2,760 ft). The positioning and dimensions of the Brandon Group ridge have made it the scene of several air accidents over the years. The mountain, and range, is named after Saint Brendan, and is the end of a Christian pilgrimage trail known as Cosán na Naomh. It is also well regarded location for hill walking with classic routes such as the 4-5 hour Faha Route (also called The Pilgrim's Path), and the 6-7 hour traverse of the entire range known as "one of the finest ridgewalks in Ireland".

  • spectacular views - take the time to climb around everything that you see. From the top, you will have a great view - maybe a low cloud sitting between two ridges?  more »
  • Our family of 4 started our Mount Brandon hike from the Baile Breac car park on a rainy day in July 2019. I'll say right away, that we did not reach the summit. I was disappointed, but I didn't...  more »

  • A fine mountain to climb if you like it steap upward. Quite straight up. A curve at the top. Very nice view all the up and from the top. Excellent. You will use from 3-4 hours in total. Bring warm clothes and some food. Parking in the bottom from both sides. No WC not wheelchair access
  • Very rewarding experience to climb mount brandon. Extremely lovely views all the way. Even though we where lucky with the weather it was still misty and cloudy on top. So you need to be even more lucky to have a free view on top. Further if you start the path at the grotto there are some steep parts that might be difficult if you are not able. Definitely recommend it and I hope I can come again. Enjoy!
