Ziggurat of UR, Nasiriyah

#23 of 81 in Things to do in Iraq
Must see · Landmark · Hidden Gem · Tourist Spot
See the remains of one of the oldest cities in the world at Ziggurat of UR. This religious building represents an example of the forerunners of what would later become temples. First built during the 21st century BCE, the rather unstable first version collapsed some 15 centuries later. The present-day site dates from the rule of King Nabonidus, and was found in an archaeological search in the beginning of the 20th century. See the ancient administrative center dedicated to the moon god, but expect to walk with security guards because of the current situation.
