Housed in the painter's town of Haarlem, Frans Hals Museum represents the largest repository of the famed Dutch artist's works in the world. Spending most of his life in Holland, Hals specialized in leaving his paintings with a "rough" finish. Visit the museum and peruse its collection of more than 750 paintings and works spread out over numerous galleries and exhibitions. Inspect Hals' "loose brushwork" up-close to fully appreciate the sense of life and movement it brought to his art, perhaps his most notable trademark. You can listen to an audio tour, included in your admission, or download the museum's smartphone app for more in-depth information along the way. Don't miss seeing the facility's collection of religious artwork and Haarlem-related artifacts also on display. Achter een kleine, mooie voorgevel ligt dit museum met heel wat zalen. Waarschijnlijk vanwege de herfst, was de grote binnentuin niet toegankelijk. Er zijn heel veel schilderijen te zien van Frans Hal... more »
Behind a small, beautiful façade lies this museum with a lot of rooms. Probably because of autumn, the large courtyard garden was not accessible. There are a lot of paintings of Frans Hals and contemporaries. This time I fell mainly on the old dollhouse, the wall covering in some halls, the meticulously painted still lifes and the antique furniture. I had seen the great portrait paintings before and have now spent a little less time on it. I didn't think the comparison with contemporary photos, etc., although guido van der Werve's 'icebreaker video', which I have seen before in De Fundatie in Zwolle, continues to fascinate. A museum that alone is worth a stop (or a day trip from Amsterdam pairing it with the beautiful Teylers) in Haarlem. It exhibits not only some masterpieces by the great Frans Hals, but above all 17th-century works by artists of the Haarlem School. It is housed in the hospice where Hals spent his last years in poverty...View original

Interesting building, artwork and other antiquities. Lovely, peaceful central courtyard. Mostly wheelchair accessible. There are only two rooms which cannot be accessed. There are accessible amenities. Friendly staff, well worth a visit.
