Old Town of Rhodes, Rhodes Town

4.5
The Order of St John of Jerusalem occupied Rhodes from 1309 to 1523 and set about transforming the city into a stronghold. It subsequently came under Turkish and Italian rule. With the Palace of the Grand Masters, the Great Hospital and the Street of the Knights, the Upper Town is one of the most beautiful urban ensembles of the Gothic period. In the Lower Town, Gothic architecture coexists with mosques, public baths and other buildings dating from the Ottoman period.

  • This is actually a walled city, entirely within the so called "New Town". About 700 metres by 500 metres. The double wall (which you cannot climb!) has a deep moat. No water, but beautiful...  more »
  • This was a stop off on a recent cruise holiday, and was absolutely wonderful. Firstly we went on a hop-on hop-off bus tour around the whole town, choosing to get off in the modern retail area. After.....  more »

  • Wow just wow is all I can say. As a fan of old ruins and quaint places, this is by far a massive importance in history. Stroll around the town inside the Fort and experience what it must have been like going back centuries. The cobbled stoned pathways, the odd ruins and the vibrant collection of shops, restaurants and so much more. At night it transforms into a beautiful spectre with so much excitement still to do. I visited here for 5 hours and wished for longer time. I wanted to explore more and discover more about its history. A wonderful exciting asset to Rhodes and trust me.. You don't visit this place, expect to know you never experienced the fullest part of your holiday..
  • If you are heading to Rhodes for a holiday then the old town is a must . It's like stepping back in time , the cobblestone streets are a treat and there is shopping for all types of tourists . If history is your thing then there is plenty to be had . Loads of bars , restaurant and even great traditional Greek takeaway food ( sorry no McDonald , just real good food) . But beware as there are scammers about . Around the Jewish square is a bar that also does food and has no prices , they lure you in with getting your picture took with the parrots the have there. Then pull you in for a drink . We got done with this scam when we had 2 pints and a child's smoothie which came to 28 Euros . Other than that it is a great place to spend the day taking in all the old town has to offer
