#1 of 271 in Museums in Grand Est
Calling all car enthusiasts! Cite de l'Automobile is the largest museum of automobiles in the world with 500 vehicles, including 464 cars from 98 different makers. This one-of-a-kind museum also boasts the famous Fritz Schlumf collection, which dates from 1878 to the present day, as well as the largest collection of Bugattis in the world. The museum itself is located in an old 1880s mill. Founded by two Swiss-born brothers, Fritz and Hans Schlumpf, the collection gained its first acquisition back in the early 1940s during the second World War. The brothers continued to build their collection over the years, and it wasn’t until 1977 that the public became aware of the collection. Not only is it the largest collection of automobiles, but it has been described as the most prestigious collection. • Very nice collection of cars for all tastes and all eras. The icing on the cake: the ephemeral Bugatti exhibition

  • This Cité de l'Automobile houses a magnificent collection initiated by the Schlumpf brothers. Nearly 600 cars are on display (early 20th century, Rolls Royce collection, Bugatti collection...). We walk all the way along the aisles and we get carried away to go back in time to the sound of period music or motors twisting. The temporary collection of recent Bugattis allows you to discover the mythical Divo, Chiron, Veyron... In short, this visit is to be done and it would please even those like me who are not necessarily undisputed fans of cars. Before we started the tour we had lunch at the Fangio restaurant adjoining the Cité de l'Automobile. The meat is great!

  • I am not a car expert but I was fascinated by a nice collection of vintage cars that make you think of Great Gatsby epoch. Young kids will be thrilled to try driving a race car in a kids corner for a small fee. The staff is friendly, the restrooms are clean. The restaurant was closed but the canteen which is situated next to it is cheap and the quality of food leaves much to be desired. The parking lot is right next to the museum.
  • This collection of veteran, vintage and classic cars is also known as the Schlumpf Collection. Located in former industrial premises the collection is large and impressive with the cars being arranged in bronze lamp-post lined rows. The collection has an interesting past with it originally being the private collection of two brothers. The collection was 'acquired' by the state and is open to the public. The condition of the collection is amazing and has within it one of the largest displays of Bugatti's in the world. It can be a little slow to get in if it is busy. Parking arrangements are good and it is pretty straightforward to find following the sat-nav address. There is a small test circuit attached to the museum to exercise the cars and there are special events held there. There is also a Veyron on show. Recommended, but remember if you are travelling from a channel port or the Tunnel it is quite a considerable run to get there. A good stopover if you are going into Switzerland. Good route to take on a motorbike using non- motorway roads, but still quite a long ride.
