Chateau d'If
An impressive castle, Chateau d'If was the setting for Alexandre Dumas' adventure novel "The Count of Monte Cristo." This three-story building is 28 m (91 ft) high, situated on an island, and bordered by three towers with large gun embrasures. The castle never weathered an actual attack, though, and was eventually transformed into a prison. French Protestants were sent there in the early 19th century. The castle was converted into a public museum in 1890. It can now be reached by boat from Marseille's old port. マルセイユの港から割と近い場所にある孤島の城塞です。 その雰囲気から巌窟王のモデルとなったとのことですが、頷けます。 more »
It is an isolated island citadel located close to the port of Marseille. It is said that it became a model of the cave king from the atmosphere, but it is said that it is possible to say.View original -
Magnifique endroit historique à visiter et bien restauré. Très bonnes explications sur la forteresse et l'histoire d'Edmond Dantès racontée dans le roman le Comte de Monté Cristo d' Alexandre Dumas. more »
Beautiful historic place to visit and well restored. Very good explanations about the fortress and the story of Edmond Dantes told in the novel The Count of Mount Cristo by Alexandre Dumas.View original

Amazingly picturesque and legendary fortress sitting on the white rock in the middle of the Marseilles' bay. Beautiful construction, visit at your own pace, stroll in the small park, rest with a coffee. Only accessible when weather allows.

Cool for the first 30-45 min. But don't think it was worth the ferry ride and having to wait for the ferry to pick us up (comes roughly every hour and half). Not everything is translated to English. A lot of the rooms/cells look the same and while the view is nice, there's limited seating to enjoy it without standing on or sitting on bird poop. The bathrooms are modern and clean on the island.
