#8 of 10 in Things to do in Pohnpei
Once the national capital, atmospheric Kolonia features the remains of a Spanish colonial fort, erected to defend the local government and military garrison. Almost complexly destroyed during World War II, the town underwent massive post-war reconstruction. Today, this lively center serves as home to government offices, public and private schools, grocery stores, restaurants, bars, hotels, and churches of various religious denominations. Kolonia is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our world travel planner, Pohnpei Edition.

  • Kolonia has interesting historical ruins from the German and Spanish colonial period, wall, cemetery and bell tower, otherwise is a very inconsistent cityscape with buildings of mostly more recent date. This former capital has tourist information, many schools and several churches. There are some restaurants that are not easy to find at first glance.

  • Kolonia is an easy town centre to wander around. There are a number of historic sites to see (Spanish Wall etc) and a few shops and cafe's to have a look and eat at.  more »
