Desert · Geologic Formation
Danakil Depression, represents the meeting place of three tectonic plates and is home to some of the strangest landscapes on the planet. Hot springs--feasting spots for extremophiles microbes--produce otherworldly shapes and colors with sulfurous mounds of yellow-rimmed mini-craters and mirages of camel caravans crawling across a chain of dried salt lakes. Lying 100 m (328 ft) below sea level, the area is known as some of the world's most inhospitable land, and, as such, has become a target of research on how life may arise on other planets. Take a guided expedition and see the place where fossils of 3.5-million-year-old Lucy Australopithecus was found in 1974.
