Sierra Negra, Isabela

#2 of 14 in Nature in Isabela
See the aftermath of recent lava flows at Sierra Negra, where the caldera ranks as the largest volcano on the Galápagos Islands. Since its last eruption in 2005, the shield volcano has continued to release heat and gases, without any major events. Take a guided tour to the volcano to learn about the geological phenomena that created it. If you put your hands over a hole in the mountainside, you'll feel the geothermal heat radiating from beneath the surface. Wear boots for the journey, as you might have to trek through deep mud on the way up. • We booked this tour (and all our tours) through Galapagos Alternative (who are spectacular!). My husband and I had a private tour of Sierra Negra with Esteban. The private tour is great so you can wal...  more »
  • It is worth doing the tour - you can also book on site at short notice!!! Riding up by bike was a great tour. But you have to be a bit fit for it. But you can also book a tour in the city. The sometimes strenuous hike was really worth it. It was very impressive and you really think you're in a different world. The landscape is beautiful, and the view over the crater is incredible. The hike is not too steep as the highest point 1490 meters /4,890 meters. Depending on the weather, it can be hot and humid and rainy and muddy

  • Great morning hike but don’t expect to see anything due to the fog and be prepared for rain and super muddy shoes. So not sure if the $40 volcano tour is really worth it.
  • Arriving at Sierra Negra volcano is amazing, it's huge.....a vast black carpet of volcanic rock covers it's surface, thats were its name derives from. Hiking around the crater and arriving at the northernmost is called volcan chico. In this area there are lots of small craters that are active and you see steam coning out if cracks. The views are outstanding and breathtaking. Very recommended.
