Los Haitises National Park, Samana Province

#1 of 7 in Nature in Samana Province
Must see · National Park · Nature / Park
Explore the remote coastal environment of Los Haitises National Park, a protected area offering diverse and abundant scenery. Take a boat tour along the coast to see the large mangrove forests and unusual limestone cones that adorn the shoreline, stopping off to see scenic caverns decorated in pictograms and petroglyphs made by as yet unidentified native populations. The diversity of ecosystems here supports a wide variety of wildlife and plant life, although much of the interior remains impenetrable. You'll mainly see coastal animals, such as frigatebirds, herons, and terns. The park keeps a cap on visitor numbers, so book your excursions well in advance to avoid disappointment.
