A landmark in the history of Cambodian Buddhism and the country’s current headquarters of the religion, Wat Ounalom stands as one of the oldest of the five pagodas in the country. Unearth the rich history of the estate, established in 1443, consisting of 44 buildings, and originally built to enshrine an eyebrow hair of Lord Buddha. Wind your way around the main temple, learning the teachings of the Buddhist philosophy, finding out about its previous inhabitants of 500 monks, and understanding the horrific desecration of the temple during the Cambodian genocide. Find the eyebrow hair remarkably still preserved in a small shrine behind the main temple. Put Wat Ounalom on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Phnom Penh online day trip planner.
