Kubu Island, Makgadikgadi Pans National Park

#3 of 10 in Nature in Botswana
A surreal landscape awaits at Kubu Island, a dry granite rock outcrop located in the largest salt pan complex in the world. Up to 1.25 m (4 ft) high, the dry stone wall with 24 loopholes related to the great Zimbabwe ruins. Look for hundreds of circular ritual stone cairns. This area is also an important prehistoric excavation spot for ancient pottery sheds and ostrich eggshell beads. Drive through and see endemic baobab trees. It is considered a sacred site, so ancient taboos on hunting and rock collecting are prohibited.
