Sunbury Plantation House, Saint Philip Parish

3.7
#3 of 15 in Things to do in Saint Philip Parish
Built in 1660 by one of the first settlers on the island, Sunbury Plantation House is a grand home filled with antiques, artwork, and even a collection of horse-drawn carriages. Despite a fire, the attraction still features impeccable rooms and gardens. Look for items once used by the plantation's inhabitants, see old optical machinery and sight-testing equipment brought to the site by a once-resident doctor, and view the largest collection of carriages in the Caribbean. The house also offers a restaurant and bar on site. • This house is so full of history and has so much to see and hear about. Our guide Keisha is clearly very knowledgable about the house and its artefacts and was able to answer all of the many questions...  more »
  • Although not everything has been on this plantation for over 400 years and much has been replaced by original parts from other plantations on the island after a fire, the Sunbury plantation is not unjustly considered Barbados' most breathtaking plantation, even the Caribbean Led. Open daily from 9.30 a.m. to 5 p.m. (only on Mondays from May to October not, as we had to learn painfully) is definitely worth a visit. If you're lucky, you get a lead on your own, especially off-season. You can see much from the last centuries since the construction in 1660 by an Irishman. The many pieces of furniture made of mahogany from Barbados as well as the collection of carriages from the earlier period are striking, all of which are still very well preserved. Even General Electric's first electric washing machine and refrigerator are on display. Little, however, is known about the people who have had to work on this plantation over the centuries. Overall, however, an interesting attraction during a holiday or a day visit, for example on a cruise tour, lastly especially if you combine the trip with a visit to the nearby Foursquare Rum distillery. Don't miss out on tasting the rum punch or rum of Barbados in the bar. Particularly noteworthy and commendable is the very friendly staff, whether at the tour or in the bar. Thank you for a nice visit.

  • Beautiful to visit. You can walk around the house and see what everything looked like back in the day. I also really enjoyed looking at their plants around the house. The plants are very different from what I usually see in the eastern USA.
  • Well preserved and interesting look into the sugar plantation history of the island. The house has many antiques and historic artifacts. The place tells a story and is well run and maintained. Scenic drive to get there too.
