Trip Planner: Europe / Austria / Vienna Region / Vienna / Natural History Museum (Naturhistorisches Museum)
Housed in an ornate palace, Natural History Museum (Naturhistorisches Museum) features a collection of artifacts that has been growing for the last 250 years. Emperor Franz I Stephan of Lorraine is credited with beginning the collection in 1750. Today, the museum is home to about 30 million objects relating to earth and life sciences. The first floor is dedicated to animal life, with exhibit halls focusing on vertebrates, crabs, arachnids, insects, mollusks, and protozoans. In the museum's mezzanine, learn about minerals, fossils, dinosaurs, the earth's history, and anthropology. The museum is best known for its dinosaur skeletons and extensive collection of meteorites. Don't miss the Venus of Willendorf, the nearly complete skeleton of a Stellar's sea cow, an animal that has been extinct for more than 200 years. Natural History Museum (Naturhistorisches Museum) Reviews
Visita imprescindible, solamente el edifico ya vale la pena visitarlo. Una colección muy buena, hacen que este museo sea de los mejores de Europa. more »Essential visit, only the building is worth visiting. A very good collection, make this museum one of the best in Europe.
more »Because the ticket office of the Art History Museum was crowded, I entered this museum without the column. There were a lot of children with her. There were stuffed animals such as jellyfish, sea creatures, and birds. The luxury of the interior of the building is worth a must-see, although the smell has been skimmed over tightly. I was able to appreciate artistically, such as ceilings and walls.
A good sized museum full of tons of animals and specimen! The museum consists of two big floors. The walking path is easy to follow and it assures you’ll see everything the museum has to see. I also thought it was nice most the informational plaques were both in German and English. I went on a Wednesday night where they are open til 9pm. The museum wasn’t very crowded which made my visit pretty peaceful. There’s a lot to see so come with plenty of time. I spent about three hours there but easily could stayed longer. Adult entrance fee is €12. I didn’t give all five stars because I was hoping for more interactive things. I still enjoyed seeing the many animals though.
Great views from the roof! I also really enjoyed the mineral collection despite not knowing much about geology. The dinosaur exhibit was quite exciting as well. If you're not super into museums I think this museum has a lot to offer and is definitely worth a visit alone or with friends/family. I recommend especially if you're in vacation and want a museum that has a mix of different exhibits
